"Having some kind of idea of how it all worked is better than nothing when going up against someone who's ability you don't know."
The one thing that did remain consistent between things he could confirm is that when he, Abel, and Tali got their Sigils, they were drained of all of their Luminosity, and they both had extremely large amounts of it. And so, Kaelen's theory was as so: Lux existed for the purpose of creating Sigils. Whatever the source of Lux was, it was built so that people would slowly build up enough Lux and Fabricate their own Sigil. Sigils were made of varying amounts of Lux. The stronger they are, the higher the cost of Fabricating a Sigil.
Something he suspected was that, even though your Luminosity is what was used to Fabricate a Sigil, it was not you who made the Sigil. And when Fabricating a Sigil, the Sigil had whatever ability you wished it had. Kaelen wished for a way to survive, a way to survive and so he got [The Sigil of Resurrection]; Abel had wished for a way to fight back and so he got [The Sigil of Weaponry]; And Tali had wished for a way to escape the oncoming conflict, wishing for a way to save Ela without drawing a weapon, and so she got [The Sigil of Initiative].
The last part of his theory wasn't something he had any proof of, but was the only explanation for the large differences in the strength of a Sigil and for large differences in how exactly a Sigil worked and was activated. He thought- No, he was almost 100% sure that when you wished for a Sigil, whoever made them used your Luminosity to give you your desired ability, putting exceptions, conditions, and weakness where necessary to decrease the Lux cost of Fabricating the Sigil until the cost was the exact amount of Lux you had available.
This explained why Kaelen's and Abel's Sigils were more general than Tali's, they had had more Lux when they had wished for it, and so less restrictions were put on it compared to Tali's. She hadn't told him all of the specifics, but he had guessed she could only dodge so many types of attacks, but could dodge those types however much she wanted.
"Perhaps it's about weapons and not type. Like she can dodge scythes but not sickles and such."
They weren't sure, but they knew that there was a restriction something like that on it, otherwise she wouldn't have ever been hit across their several fights, or at least hit less.
But if that was true, then there was no real way to correctly predict exactly what Sister Mirror's [The Sigil of Mirrors] did. As it depended on exactly how much Lux she had when she had received her Sigil, and it also required him to know how much Lux abstract things like "the ability to mirror" cost when he didn't even have a basic understanding on how much most basic things, like forks, gave when Blazed- Or at least didn't until he started seeing the [System]'s notifications after he had been temporarily replaced by Abel. There was nothing that they could do to prepare aside from just train with their Sigil and wait.
-Tali-
She had been the one to spot it on the floor in front of the door. A letter.
Tali: Hey Kaelen?
Kaelen: What is it?
Tali: Were you expecting anything today?
She holds out the letter, passing it to Kaelen, who flips it over confused.
Kaelen: ... No... I'm not. Also look-
He flipped it over and over again for her, trying to show her something.
Kaelen: No name on it, to or from.
Tali: You don't think...
Kaelen: I mean, it has to be, right?
Tali: Can I-?
Kaelen: Go ahead.
He passed the letter back to her. She opened it and began to read aloud.
"To my dear Sister and Brother, I invite you both to come down to a Circus show. Please do come, you find it quite revealing of everything you wish to see. Whether it be a lost sister, or a passionate urge to kill a Mirror, come on down and see a show performed by the Circus -"
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
There was clearly another word after that, but it was scratched out. It was them. Sister Mirror was inviting them somewhere for their confrontation. Though there was no sign of where exactly the invitation wanted them to go.
Tali: But where are we supposed to be going?
Kaelen: Check the back.
Turning it over Tali saw an extra message.
"If you find yourself interested in seeing my little circus show, then you have the day to find my location. It shouldn't be too hard, we'll be under the big top."
Tali: I see. I guess we should start looking. Do we split up or...?
Kaelen: No. She said they were in a Big Top, right? It shouldn't take us a whole day to find that. And if it does then we can't be alone when we find that big top.
Tali: Where would there even be room to put a big top?
Kaelen: You can't guess? It'll be where the festival was. Where I got kidnapped. We know the Circus Lights probably already have some kind of base there.
Tali: That's true... Why didn't I think about that? Let's get going then!
Tali shot out of Kaelen's house, Kaelen following her as they headed to where the Festival of the Sun used to be. Kaelen was exactly right, when they arrived there was a massive big top, spanning the whole space of the wide open area that had once been inhabited by the festival. In front of the big top was a sign that read "Entrance only with invitation", a woman in a mask with full facial features and a circus costume standing next to it, blocking the entrance.
Tali: -YOU!
Sister Mirror: Tickets please. Entrance only with invitation. And only entrance will allow the fun to start~!
Tali goes to hit her, but Kaelen stops her.
Kaelen: Not yet. Not here. Don't forget, you never know who's watching.
Sister Mirror: And what a very smart man you are sir. Were you invited to our circus?
Tali, annoyed: We were.
Tali hands the letter over Sister Mirror.
Sister Mirror: Unfortunately, this is only valid for one admittance, that of Kaelen Calder. Do you happen to have an invitation as well madam? Perhaps forgotten at home?
Tali: W-what?
Sister Mirror: No entry without invitation~! You best be off and go get your invitation if you want to join the fun. Go on now~! You don't want to be late!
Tali: K-Kaelen?
Kaelen: Go, I can deal with her myself. And distract her if I can't. Hurry and see if you can find that invitation.
Tali: But what about Ela?
Kaelen: I'll see if I can find her. But she won't be my priority. My priority is you.
Sister Mirror: Me~? And what exactly did I do?
Kaelen: You got away. You kidnapped my friend's sister. You know what you did.
Sister Mirror: I think you may have made a mistake. I don't know who you are.
Kaelen: I know you Circus Light. Sister Mirror.
Sister Mirror: I admit I am a Circus Light, but I am not Lady Mirror.
Tali: You aren't? Who are you then?
???: My most sincere apologies~! But I can't tell you that. Why are you still here? Shouldn't you be running to get that invitation of yours?
Tali: I- Fine. Kaelen.
Kaelen: Yes?
Tali: Take care.
Tali began to run as fast as she could, back to her house to find the invitation. Now that she thought about it, the non-facial markings on that Circus Lights mask was different to that of Sister- Lady Mirror's. She'd have to pay more attention to things like that when dealing with the Circus Lights.
-Kaelen-
"I'm surprised at how easily you're lying to Tali, I thought you were friends?"
We are. But trust me on this, this whole dying over and over thing isn't something we want to tell everyone about.
"That I agree with, but shouldn't Tali be one of the people that we do tell?"
She became a Circus Light, we don't know for certain that she's on our side still, we can't trust her just yet.
"I guess you kind of have a point there..."
Kaelen took a deep breath and entered the Big Top, both of the other times that he did this he died and caused a fatal error. He really couldn't make that mistake again.
"... What?"
Inside was an endless void of just blackness. It was dark, almost as dark as when he was kidnapped by Brother Shade. He hated the dark, spinning around he tried to find the way back out but saw nothing. Just an endless expanse of nothingness. He was in a completely different location than the other two times he had entered the Big Top. He had no way to know what was coming his way anymore, and it horrified him.
