  Chapter 17: Damned, The Altars of Fate.

  ~~~ [START]
  {ELSEWHERE}
  In a silent building, the undead sat in a lounge. Their gazes all turned to a woman who, much like them, was breathless and cold.
  “Are you sure?” Carlisle, a middle-aged pale man, was the first to break the silence.
  Alice, the one who was standing in the middle, paused in hesitation. Her hands trembled under her oversized hoodie, her eyes turned downward to the white-tiled floor.
  “It’s okay, darling.” Esme, a woman who slumped on the sofa atop Carlisle’s chest, spoke next, “You can say it.”
  Alice’s eyes lifted around her, turning to the many who were staring back. “Yes.”
  And Edward jolted from the side, so much so that Jasper shot his hand to his arm, completely halting him.
  “Don’t be rash!” Edythe hissed from beside them. “What do you think you’re gonna do when—”
  “If what Alice said is true, then we—” Edward tried, but—
  “Edward! He knows about the Volturi!” Edythe shot back. And everyone’s eyes widened at her words. “He’s not normal… fuck, you couldn’t even properly read his mind!”
  “I did—”
  “Everyone, calm down!” Carlisle tried to jump in.
  “How are we supposed to do that?” But Rosalie cut from the corner, walking forward as Emmett sighed from the back. “Your ‘son’ already exposed us to his girlfriend.”
  Edward’s fists clenched harder by the second.
  “And do you really think letting a mate ‘suck on a human’ won’t make it worse?” Rosalie’s words continued.
  And Carlisle’s frown twitched beside them, with Esme’s expression turning dark.
  “What about the treaty?” Again, Rosalie asked, nearly pushing away Emmett, who walked forward and hugged her from behind. “Do you guys not realise that the girl lives in Forks?”
  “It doesn’t make any sense,” Edward huffed.
  “It does if it’s an ability,” Edythe said from beside him.
  Carlisle nodded, “The logic makes sense.”
  Edward shot his eyes at him. “Carlisle—”
  “If his ability is some kind of concealment, it makes sense why you couldn’t tell he was a vampire—”
  “He has flesh and blood—”
  You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.
  “It also makes sense why Edward couldn’t get a read—”
  “I can read his mind; it’s just difficult!” Edward tried to reassure, eyes turning to Edythe. “You know I can… You read my thoughts. He can breathe, he has blood, he, he—”
  “He what?” Rosalie interrupted. “Why aren’t you also telling them what he looks like? He looks like us, doesn’t he? Golden eyes, pale skin, seems to hear us when we speak. Should I really continue?”
  “He isn’t a vampire!”
  “He was drinking blood, Edward!” Rosalie screamed.
  And on the other side, Jasper nodded at Carlisle, who started walking to the door.
  “Where are you going?” Alice’s eyes widened when she said it.
  Esme sprinted, then placed her hands on Alice’s shoulders. “Don’t worry, honey.”
  “You coming?” Jasper said, head turned to Emmett, who also walked to the door with them.
  Emmett turned before he stepped out. “Edward?”
  Then, in a blur, Edward disappeared, and the sound of his engine roared from outside.
  “You guys are taking the car?” Edythe questioned.
  “We’ll ditch it when we reach La Bella.” Carlisle closed the glass door behind him, with both Emmett and Jasper exiting in sync.
  Alice could only glance at their vanishing reflections, wishing with all her heart that what she saw would never occur.
  Because it wasn’t the first time she had seen it happen, and every time, with every single vision, ‘his’ future always changed.
  Nothing about ‘him’ was certain. Nothing.
  {ELSEWHERE}
  The door to a room flung open.
  Troy budged in, with Honey fully suspended by his hands, which had a firm grasp of her ass, kissing him.
  He roughly slumped her on the bed, with his breath hitching after she locked her legs on his figure, below the belt.
  Her hands moved, trying with all their might to remove his jacket.
  Troy pulled it out, unintentionally ripping it apart with one hand.
  Honey laughed at the sight; she was drunk.
  And she kissed him before he could escape, inserting both hands within the lower part of his shirt, moving them on his abs, and forcing him to take it off.
  But because of the heat, without resistance, Troy ripped his shirt too. Then he bent, and blinked more from the sight of her panties; her legs were open too wide.
  She immediately twisted as soon as both hands held him tight. And just like that, Troy turned; with swiftness, she was the one in control; her body was now lying atop him.
  Then she bent, drew him for a kiss, and with her other hand, massaged the bump between his legs.
  Troy nearly moaned, but she moaned louder, silencing his voice.
  But, right before she could pull her shirt off, right before his eyes could be blessed with the sight of her skin—
  A foreign smell blessed his nose; it was a scent of crystal. The type in-between foul and pleasant.
  He knew what it was.
  So immediately, with a flicker of a finger, a tiny breeze of wind suddenly changed direction and knocked Honey out.
  She fell onto his chest, and he carried her, fixed the bed, then pushed her under it.
  His eyes sparkled golden when he jolted up. And the earth under his feet shook unevenly, like an earthquake.
  Then Troy’s eyes turned to the window. And in the far distance, too far for any human to perceive, was a figure.
  The figure was rather too large for the norm, but he didn’t believe he was noticed.
  It didn’t smell like what triggered him in the slaughters; in fact, it smelled like the complete opposite. It was the opposite.
  It was large, so large that it was covered by the darkness, and its scent was horrid and confusing.
  It reminded him of a wet dog, but only this time with a hundred times the intensity.
  It was disgusting.
  {ELSEWHERE}
  “The Shifters… they are chasing them!” Alice’s eyes shot to reality.
  “Those Mutts.” Rosalie jolted, as Edythe, who was standing beside her, did the same.
  “Let’s move—!”
  Edythe’s eyes flickered when she noticed that Alice was already gone. She had long since sprinted to the woods. Long since vanished.
  But they were too ignorant. Too weak. Too oblivious.
  Because even if their first objective had been achieved, who on earth would dare to stop him?
