The Birthday Match

The house is dead quiet. Not the normal kind the heavy, uncomfortable kind.

  Klaus stays in his room.

  Lucas stays in his room.

Rico walks around like a ghost.

Even Emma doesn’t know what to say.

  Then the worst news comes:

  Both academies suspend them.

  No warnings.No negotiations.

  Just a cold message:

“Indefinite suspension for conduct unbecoming of academy players.”

Rico is disappointed, hurt, and tired. The boys say nothing they blame each other inwardly.

Rico's old teammates, friends, and even retired legends plan a:

Surprise backyard birthday party Balloons Music Food A friendly exhibition match in his honor

Emma and Rico’s friends want this to lift Rico’s spirits after the scandal.

  Then the twist…

The organizer tells Klaus and Lucas:

“You two are playing on the same team.”

  Both instantly protest:

  Klaus: “No. Absolutely not.”

Lucas: “I’m not passing to him.”

But Emma steps forward soft voice but strong heart:

  “Please… do it for Papa.”

That’s the one sentence neither can refuse.

  They agree, but not happily.

The backyard and small pitch come alive:

  Balloons everywhere

  Music pumping

  People dancing

  Legends shaking Rico’s hand

  Everyone excited for the match

Emma smiling, finally seeing joy on her father’s face

But Rico…He’s nervous.Because this match is not about football it’s about hope.

  He whispers to himself:

“Please… just let today go well.”

  Referee blows the whistle.

Everyone watches the Santos brothers like hawks.

Lucas gets the ball.Everyone expects him to dribble…He doesn’t.

He sends a perfect early cross into the box.

Klaus arrives like a bullet DIVING HEADER. BOOM. 1–0.

  No celebration.No fist bumps.

Just a cold walk back to the center circle.

  But Rico’s eyes shine.He whispers:

  “They remembered…”

  Klaus has the ball.

  Lucas makes a run.

Klaus lifts it a sneaky chip over the defenders.

Lucas sprints onto it 1v1 Fake shot.Keeper dives.Lucas passes the ball into the empty net.

  2–0. Crowd explodes.

  Now people are cheering:

  “THE SANTOS BROTHERS!”“MAGIC!”

  Klaus still doesn’t smile.Lucas doesn’t either.

  But they’re playing brilliantly.

What happens next is pure cinema:

Klaus scores again from Lucas’s through ball

Lucas bends one top corner after Klaus drags defenders wide

Klaus scores a tap-in after Lucas skins three defenders

Lucas scores his hat-trick off Klaus’s rebound

  The match ends 6–2.

  Both brothers: Hat-tricks

  Assists to each other

  Total domination

The crowd is losing their minds.Even the ex-legends clap.

  Rico…?Rico is speechless.

He wipes a tear when they hand him the trophy.

He hugs them both tightly thinking:

“Maybe… maybe this fight saved them.”

But behind their forced smiles, behind the applause and the cheers…

Both boys still resent each other.Deeply.

The next morning, Rico gets a phone call.

  The agent says:

“We’re calling from Harwich FC (Championship club in England). We’re interested in signing one of your sons.”

  Rico swallows hard.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

  “Which one?”

The answer hits him like a punch:

“Both impressed us…But we can offer Klaus a professional contract. For Lucas… we can only offer a youth-team spot.”

Rico thanks them and hangs up, heart heavy.

  Because he knows what’s coming.

Dinner is served. Something warm and homely, rice with grilled chicken.

  Rico clears his throat.

“I need to tell you something important.”

  Rico explains:

  Harwich FC wants Klaus.

And Lucas for the youth team for now.

Klaus is thrilled but quiet he knows Lucas will explode.

  Lucas’s hands tighten.

  He says calmly… too calmly:

“I’m not joining a youth team.I know my worth.I’m better than that.If they don’t want me for the first team, I reject it.”

  Rico tries to reason:

  “Lucas… if you prove yourself—”

  Lucas cuts him off:

“No.I’m not second to anyone. Not to Klaus. Not to anybody.”

  He stands up.

  “May I be excused?”

  Rico nods reluctantly.

Lucas leaves the table, chest tight, pride burning.

  Klaus stays silent.

Silent because…maybe for the first time…

He realizes what it feels like to be on the other side of the spotlight.

  The morning after dinner:

Lucas wakes up early. He goes outside. He practices alone… HARD.

  But something’s wrong:

  His touches are sloppy

  His shots are rushed

He keeps messing up simple passes

  His frustration builds

Emma watches from the window, worried.

Lucas finally screams and kicks a ball into the fence.

This is the FIRST TIME we see Lucas doubt himself.

  He whispers:

  “Why wasn’t I enough…?”

Meanwhile, Klaus gets a congratulatory call from:

  His academy

  His coach

A former National Youth Team member

  His friends

  The Harwich FC head scout

Everyone’s treating Klaus like a rising star.

  But inside?

  He feels guilty.

He can’t enjoy the success because he feels he pushed Lucas to hard.

“Did I earn this… or was I chosen because I’m safer than Lucas?”

  Rico is stressed:

He wants Klaus to sign with Harwich

But he fears Lucas will feel abandoned

And he’s scared Lucas might destroy his own future out of pride

Rico discusses it with Emma, who gives him a brutal line:

“Papa… you can’t fix Lucas. He has to fix himself. But you also can’t sacrifice Klaus because Lucas is hurting.”

Rico realizes he must support both, even if it hurts one.

Lucas comes home from training frustrated.Klaus tries to talk to him for real this time.

  Klaus:

“Lucas, you’re great. You’ll get your chance. Just take the youth—”

  Lucas explodes:

“Easy for YOU to say! YOU got the first team!YOU got the contract! YOU got everything!”

  Klaus:

  “I worked for it!”

  Lucas:

“So did I! But nobody sees me because YOU shine brighter!”

They finally say the thing they’ve kept inside for YEARS.

Lucas storms out, slamming the door.

Klaus punches the wall not in anger at Lucas, but at himself.

That night, Rico gets an email:

Harwich FC wants an answer within 48 hours.

  Klaus talks to Rico:

“Dad…If Lucas won’t take the youth offer…Maybe I shouldn’t take the first team one.”

  Rico is stunned.

  He answers:

“No.You don’t throw away your future because Lucas can’t handle his emotions.”

This hits Klaus hard but he knows Rico is right.

Harwich FC Offices Three Days Later

Rico sits across from the club's Director of Football and the contract negotiator. Klaus is beside him, nervous but trying to stay composed.

The Director slides a document across the table.

"Five years. Starting salary of £2,000 per week, rising to £3,500 in year three if performance clauses are met. You'll be registered as a backup striker, but we see you as our future. Our wonderkid."

Klaus's eyes widen. Rico reads through the contract carefully, his expression unreadable.

"He'll need proper support. Training, mentorship, game time when he's ready."

"Of course. We're investing in Klaus for the long term."

  Rico looks at his son.

  "What do you think?"

  Klaus swallows hard.

  "I think… I want this."

  Rico nods.

  "Then let's do it."

  They sign.

  One Week Later Training Ground

Klaus is packing his things from the academy locker room—his boots, his training gear, a few personal items. It feels surreal. This place shaped him, and now he's leaving it behind.

  He pauses.

  I should say goodbye.

He walks out to the main pitch.

Lucas is there alone, as always running through shooting drills. The ball flies into the net, over and over. Mechanical. Relentless.

Klaus hesitates at the edge of the pitch, then calls out:

  "Lucas!"

Lucas stops mid-run, turning slowly. His face is unreadable.

Klaus walks closer, hands in his pockets.

"I'm, uh… I'm heading out tomorrow. Moving to Harwich. Just wanted to say… I'm gonna miss you, man. Even if we didn't talk much."

  Silence.

  Lucas just stares at him.

  Klaus shifts uncomfortably.

  "Anyway. Take care of yourself."

  He turns and walks away.

  Lucas stands there, frozen.

Then, so quietly that only he can hear it, he whispers:

  "Miss you too."

  His jaw tightens.

  He picks up the ball.

  And goes back to training.

Harwich FC — One Week Into the Season

  The club's social media explodes:

OFFICIAL: Klaus Hale joins Harwich FC on a five-year deal!

Welcome to the Seagulls, Klaus! ??? #HFCFAMILY

The photos show Klaus holding up the blue and white shirt:

  Number 24.

He smiles for the camera, but inside, his heart is pounding.

This is real. This is happening.

  First Team Training

Klaus trains with professionals for the first time.

  They're faster. Stronger. Sharper.

  But Klaus holds his own.

The manager, Tony Grant, pulls him aside after a session.

"You've got something, kid. Raw, but it's there. Keep working, stay humble, and you'll get your chance."

  "Yes, coach."

  Harwich FC 2 - 1 Riverside United — 68th Minute

Klaus sits on the bench, watching the game unfold. His team is up 2-1, but they need to kill the match.

  Then the manager shouts:

  "Santos! Warm up!"

  Klaus's heart jumps.

"You're going on for the last 20. Stay sharp, look for space."

  70th minute Klaus comes on.

The crowd chants. He can feel the weight of it.

  Don't mess this up.

  82nd Minute

The ball is played forward a perfectly weighted through ball from the midfielder.

Klaus sees it before the defender does.

He bursts into the channel, using his body to shield the ball as the defender crashes into him from behind.

  But Klaus is stronger.

He muscles him off, gets his foot to the ball

and rockets it past the keeper.

  3-1.

  The crowd erupts.

  Klaus stands there, stunned.

  Then his teammates mob him.

  "YES, KLAUS!"

  "WHAT A FINISH!"

He looks up at the stands searching for Rico.

  And there he is.

Rico stands, clapping slowly, tears in his eyes.

  Klaus points at him.

Meanwhile Lucas watches the goal on his phone.

The clip has already gone viral:

"17-year-old Klaus Hale scores on his debut for Harwich FC!"

  Lucas stares at the screen.

Klaus's celebration. The joy. The freedom.

  He locks his phone.

  Goes back to the pitch.

  And trains.

  Harder.

  Faster.

  Again.

  Again.

  AGAIN.

  My time will come.

  It has to.

  That Night — 11:47 PM

Lucas is lying in bed, exhausted, when his phone buzzes.

  Unknown Number.

  He frowns.

  Picks up.

  "Hello?"

  A calm, measured voice responds:

  "Is this Lucas Hale?"

  "Yeah. Who's asking?"
