Chapter 24 — The Hunt Begins

The warehouse door opened with a heavy creak.

  Kaelion stepped out first.

Morning light filled the street, but the scene still felt dark.

Crawler corpses were scattered across the asphalt. Some had been torn apart, others split clean in half. Black blood stained the road in dark patches.

The air carried the sharp smell of blood.

Lucas stepped outside and looked at the scene.

  “Damn…”

“This place looks like a graveyard.”

Ethan rested his axe on his shoulder.

“And right in the middle of that graveyard…”

Aria stepped out from the window side and looked toward the street.

  “…there it is.”

The Werewolf stood in the center of the road.

Its gray fur was soaked with blood.

Its chest rose and fell slowly.

A deep cut marked its left shoulder.

Parts of the fur on its back had been torn away.

Despite that, it still looked massive.

  The Werewolf lifted its head.

  It sniffed the air.

Then its yellow eyes locked directly onto them.

  Lucas whispered slowly.

  “…it found us.”

A purple system screen appeared in Kaelion’s vision.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

  [Special Quest Triggered]

  Hunter’s Revenge

  New lines appeared.

  Target: Werewolf

  Rank: E

  Then the quest message appeared.

You once fled from this predator.

  Now the hunt begins.

Kaelion stared at the screen for a few seconds.

  Then it disappeared.

  Lucas looked at him.

  “What happened?”

  Kaelion answered briefly.

  “Nothing.”

But his eyes were already fixed on the Werewolf.

  The Werewolf growled.

A deep sound spread across the street.

  Then it suddenly moved.

  Lucas shouted.

  “It’s coming!”

  Kaelion spoke immediately.

  “Plan!”

  Ethan stepped forward.

He gripped his axe with both hands.

  “Come on then.”

  The Werewolf leapt toward Ethan.

  Its speed was unbelievable.

  Ethan swung the axe.

A claw slammed into the weapon.

  Ethan’s arms trembled.

  “Strong!”

The Werewolf swung its second claw.

  Ethan barely avoided it.

  Kaelion shouted.

  “Lucas!”

  Lucas rushed forward immediately.

  He swung the metal pipe.

The strike hit the Werewolf’s ribs.

But the creature only stepped back slightly.

  Lucas’s eyes widened.

  “…this thing’s a tank.”

  The Werewolf turned toward Lucas.

  Its claw swung.

Lucas jumped back just in time.

The claw ripped into the asphalt.

  Concrete shattered.

  Lucas’s face turned pale.

  “Okay… this is bad.”

  At that moment Aria moved.

Silently she slipped behind the Werewolf.

  Her knife flashed.

The blade cut across the Werewolf’s back.

  The Werewolf howled in rage.

  AOOO!

  The creature spun around.

Its claw slashed through the air.

Aria barely jumped back in time.

But the Werewolf was incredibly fast.

  The claw grazed her arm.

  Aria stumbled backward.

  Lucas shouted.

  “Aria!”

  Aria gritted her teeth.

  “I’m fine!”

But blood was running down her arm.

  The Werewolf attacked again.

  This time toward Ethan.

  A claw struck the axe.

But the second blow slammed into Ethan’s chest.

  THUD

Ethan was thrown several meters back.

  He hit the ground hard.

  Lucas’s eyes widened.

  “Ethan!”

  Ethan coughed.

  “I’m okay…”

  But he struggled to stand.

  The Werewolf lunged again.

  But this time Kaelion moved.

Predator Instinct screamed in his mind.

  Right!

  Kaelion shifted aside.

The claw sliced through empty air.

  Kaelion seized the moment.

He drove his knife into the Werewolf’s wounded shoulder.

  The Werewolf howled.

The creature spun to throw Kaelion aside.

  Kaelion jumped back.

  Lucas attacked again.

He slammed the pipe into the Werewolf’s leg.

  The creature staggered.

Ethan got back to his feet.

  He raised the axe.

  “Now!”

  Ethan swung.

The axe buried itself in the Werewolf’s back.

  The Werewolf roared in fury.

  But it was still standing.

  Lucas breathed heavily.

“…why is this thing still alive?”

Kaelion tightened his grip on the knife.

The Werewolf’s eyes turned toward him again.

Those yellow eyes held nothing but rage.

The creature prepared to attack again.

  Kaelion spoke calmly.

  “It’s not over yet.”

The Werewolf took one step forward.

  Then another.

  And lunged once more.
