Jack’s eyes were almost closed as he looked at the whiteboard; it wasn’t his fault; math was always so boring. Jack’s eyes always glazed over in math class, and Math 101 was no different than before. Science was exciting, it was a fun first day with Cassidy as his lab partner, but this? He was on his own this time. He sat in the middle of the class; he never wanted to be noticed in math class. Being called on to do a math question in class was the most embarrassing thing he could imagine. It was then that the teacher, Mr. Preston, a dull-looking, balding middle-aged man in a bowtie, said to the class, “Who wants to solve for X?” Jack’s wondering eyes immediately paid attention to this; he did not want to be called. Luckily for him, a hand shot up in the front row. His teacher smiled, “Ah, yes, Mr. Lowenstein, I am not surprised. Please come up and show your classmates how it’s done.” The boy got out of his seat and headed for the board. Jack could tell the boy was very tall for his age. Despite being only 14, he was already tall at about 5’ 10’’, and he would get only taller as he got older. In addition to being tall, he was also incredibly thin, almost as thin as Jack. His hair was a light sandy brown, almost blonde. He went up to the board and effortlessly did the equation. Jack could see that the young man wore a sweater vest over his shirt and a Star of David pin on his lapel. Jack smiled as he saw the green eyes and the boyish face of the young man for a brief second. They locked eyes, and Jack was instantly smitten.
“Hello! Earth to Jack! Are you listening to me?” Jack broke out of his trance as he sat at the lunch table. “Oh, nothing, Cassidy,” Cassidy replied. “Bluntly, oh, it isn’t nothing, you were looking thin and pale over there.” Jack blushed, “Absolutely not.” Cass smiled, “Oh, you are so smitten with that guy over there.” She paused, “I don't care if you are gay,” then sipped her soda. Jack replied, “Please don't use that word around me; it makes me nervous.” Cass shrugged "This LA no care who you are into.... Are you gay?” Jack sighed “I think I am... just don't tell anyone” Cassidy shrugged “Sure I guess, I don't see the big deal” Jack sighed “Well if you tell someone it might get back to my mom” She sighed “Well, she will find out sooner or later, fine... I'll keep your secret” Jack smiled “Thank you” Cassidy then picked up her lunch and went over to the boy and sat next to him and said to Jack “Hey Jack come over here!” Jack sighed and came over to join them.” Cass smiled, “Hey there, I’m Cassidy, and this is my friend Jack.” Jack waved brashly, and the boy smiled, “I’m Adam.”

Cassidy replied, “Yeah, we saw you here alone and thought we would sit beside you.” Adam smiled. “How nice, I was just reading this book here,” he pointed to the book in his hand, which read “The Conspiracy: The Zarthan Chronicles book IV”. Jack said “I love the Zarthan Chronicles! I’ve read all the books...” It was then that something clicked “Wait... Lowenstein? Are you related to the author Harlan Lowenstein?” Adam replied, gruffly "What you think all Jews know each other?” there was a pause and Adam started laughing “I’m kidding, yes he’s my father” Jack was excited “Cool! I love his books!” Adam nodded “Good, I’ll tell him that” Cass rolled “Her eyes, oh nerd shit.... I get it” Adam giggled “Yeah nerd stuff, I’m a nerdy guy always have been” Jack replied, “Oh that’s great!” Cass rolled her eyes “You two should just get married already” this was then followed by a swift and gentle elbow to the ribs. Adam laughed, “You must be new in town; I'll give you my cellphone number, and we can talk when not at school.” Cass sighed, “I guess we should have each other's phone numbers.” Jack was beaming with excitement; this day was going very well.
