Adam opened his subspace in silence.
The cavern chamber assigned to him was quiet except for the distant rhythm of the mountain—stone shifting, forges breathing, voices echoing through carved halls. He sat on a low bench, elbows on his knees, and let the System respond.
The world peeled back.
Inventory unfolded around him in layered panes, each category stacked with the weight of weeks of blood, fear, and survival.
He hadn’t looked at it properly in a long time.

Adam stared at the number longer than he meant to.
I’d have to go to a dwarven or elvish city to spend this properly, he thought.
Then immediately: And that’s not happening any time soon.
He exhaled and scrolled.

Adam closed his eyes.
This wasn’t his inventory.
It was theirs.
And it was a mess.
He spent the next hours breaking it down.
Not destroying—distributing.
He waited until the kids finished their latest training rotations and had officially unlocked their professions, earned the hard way through repetition and mentorship.
Marcus received alchemical reagents, monster cores to study, proper vials, and a share of venom sacs. He took the alchemist profession in hopes to help with his tonics in the future.
Aurelia was given silk, hide, and chitin—enough to experiment without fear of ruining everything. She took the Tailor profession similar to her skill but allowing her to make more.
Lucius received spare shields, reinforcement materials, and earth-aligned gear to practice binding. He also took the Leather smith profession.
Tiber and Cassian split ranged supplies, enchanted arrowheads, scouting tools, and hunting kits. Tiber took the scout profession while Cassian took the hunter.
Galen took blades, throwing weapons, and items that didn’t show up on lists easily. He surprisingly chose the builder profession.
Livia received healing supplies, holy reagents, bandages, and access to the better drafts. She took the Chef profession.
Maris was given light gear, wraps, and training weights meant to condition rather than kill.
No one argued.
They understood.
By the time he finished, Adam’s subspace felt lighter.

Cleaner.
Still dangerous—but purposeful.
He sought Gorak next.
The orc stood near the forge halls, arms crossed as sparks leapt and fell around him like fireflies.
“I’m going to be gone for a bit,” Adam said without preamble.
Gorak turned slowly. “Silverpeak.”
“Yes.”
A pause. Then: “You may not return.”
“I know.”
Gorak grunted. “I will watch them. Break them if needed. Keep them alive.”
“That’s all I ask,” Adam said.
Later that night, Adam sat with Kharzug Stoneblood on a high terrace overlooking the settlement. The air was cold, sharp, clean. Between them sat a squat stone bottle and two carved cups.
The whiskey burned.
Smoky. Deep. Aged in stone, not wood.
It reminded Adam painfully of Jameson.
“Your kind drinks like it expects tomorrow,” Kharzug said, watching him carefully.
Adam snorted softly. “We usually do.”
They drank in silence for a while.
Then Adam spoke. “I’m asking you to keep helping them. Training. Shelter. Even if I don’t come back.”
Kharzug didn’t answer immediately.
Finally, he said, “If you succeed… and that forest breaks instead of you?”
Adam nodded. “There will be a place no one wants. That means it will be ours.”
The chief studied him, then raised his cup.
“Then we will remember you as the human who pointed us toward a better battlefield.”
They drank.
The refugees arrived the next morning.
Humans first—ragged, exhausted, carrying tools, seeds, books, stories. Then smaller orc clans, battered and wary. Each group brought chaos.
They also brought knowledge.
Hidden paths.
Old warnings.
Drow tactics observed too late.
Maps half-remembered.
Songs about Silverpeak that ended badly.
The settlement strained—but held.
That evening, Adam gathered the kids.
“I’m leaving in a few days,” he said plainly.
The words landed hard. Each felt like he was leaving them behind because they were a burden.
“To scout. To prepare. To see if Silverpeak can be turned into something that doesn’t eat us alive.”
Maris clenched her jaw.
Livia looked like she wanted to argue and knew she shouldn’t.
Lucius stared at the ground.
Marcus swallowed.
“You keep training,” Adam continued. “You keep each other alive. You don’t try to follow me.”
Cassian nodded first. “We’ll be ready.”
Adam smiled faintly. “That’s all I want.”
Later—alone again—Adam realized something unsettling.
He hadn’t checked his own progress in a long time.
He opened the menu.

Adam stared at the level number.
Sixteen.
He closed the menu slowly.
Good, he thought.
I might need every bit of it.
Far away, beyond stone and smoke and growing war, a forest of silver waited.
And Adam began planning how to walk into hell alone—so the people behind him wouldn’t have to.
