Another beautiful day. Birds chirping, flowers blooming. And for some reason the temperature is still cold, despite being the middle of April. Especially these quiet mornings. Well, most mornings are quiet. But not this one.
Evervale Peninsula. There's not too much sightseeing here. Just grape farms as far as the eye can see. And a gigantic forest, which originally was three separate ones but was left unattended. So the three forests grew into one. There's a name for this forest, but who cares about that?
And a Division a small Division but still loved by the locals where the newest workers only joined a week ago.
Deep in this big, overgrown forest the wind shakes the leaves of the trees, making them tremble. Birds are flying away from a particular spot. Here, the sound of blades slashing fills the air.
Diff and Johnny are fighting against a skeleton. A four foot tall skeleton with four arms, each holding a sword. But that's not all this skeleton has three heads.
"Plan?" - Johnny asks as he pulls out a simple short sword from its black sheath.
"You didn't make one?" - Diff asks, holding a warhammer with a long rod the same weapon that got pressed into his hands in the middle of the shopping mall incident.
"Great. No plan." - Johnny comments.
Diff rushes forward, trying to hit the skeleton in the knee. But the skeleton acts quickly. It swings at Diff with all four swords.
The sound of a loud clang rushes through the forest. Diff is holding the hammer to block the upper two swords. Meanwhile his Vetra, the monkey hands are tightly gripping the lower two swords.
"Now!" - Diff shouts as the skeleton is still focused on him.
Johnny dashes behind the skeleton. He swings the short sword in his hand and successfully manages to slice the skeleton’s spine in two.
The upper body of the skeleton falls backwards. It lets out a loud shriek as its body hits the ground. Both Diff and Johnny take a step back, watching the skeleton for its next move.
But the skeleton stays motionless. Black spots start to appear on its body. These black spots start to eat the bones away, decaying them rapidly. Tiny bits and pieces float slowly up into the sky.
Within a few seconds the only thing left behind by the skeleton is just four swords without a sheath.
"Did we win?" - Diff asks, remembering his fight against the snake.
"I guess…" - Johnny answers as he picks up one of the swords while putting back his in the sheath.
"Should we take these with us?"- Johnny asks, holding up the sword.
"Loot is loot." - Diff comments as he grabs two swords.
"Loot is loot." - Johnny agrees, picking up the fourth sword from the ground.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
The way back to the Division would be quiet. Usually it is. As Diff and Johnny pass by the local hospital they hear two people arguing. They both wear white hospital uniforms.
"How could you be so reckless and unprofessional?" - One shouts, using hand gestures aggressively.
"I operated! I helped someone! I don't care if the patient doesn't have insurance, I won't let the patient bleed out!" - The other one bursts out loudly, stomping her foot impatiently.
"Then you are no longer welcome here!" - Person one shouts again.
Meanwhile Diff and Johnny just stare at the scene unfolding. Another random bystander offers them some popcorn with a silent smile. Both Johnny and Diff happily take a handful. The random bystander leaves to offer it to someone else.
"Quiet town, but the drama deserves a gold medal." - Diff whispers to Johnny.
"Agree." - Johnny pops a popcorn into his mouth.
"Fire me? You can't fire me because I quit!" - Person two comments loudly, storming into the building.
This is the cue for Diff and Johnny to leave. The remainder of the road goes surprisingly quiet. Because it turns out it's difficult to eat popcorn while holding multiple weapons…
As Diff opens the front door he spots the big TV in the room close to the kitchen is on. From the couch Yunyan's messy purple bed hair is barely visible. She appears to be playing something on the game station.
"Yunyan, commission successful," - Johnny speaks, walking into the kitchen.
Diff walks into the kitchen as well. The table is close to being set. Plates in a tower stack up on each other. There is a big tray in the middle filled with a large number of croissants. The croissants just pile up on each other.
Vaska stands nearby the coffee machine. She looks at Johnny and Diff.
"Successful commission?" - She speaks as she grabs Yunyan's mug from the shelf. She turns to them. "You came home with more weapons. Just put them in the armory. Second floor, right in front of Yunyan's office."
Johnny nods his thanks. He grabs the other two swords from Diff then leaves to put them away.
"Today's plans? And Yunyan always plays videogames?" - Diff asks, grabbing a mug for himself.
Vaska blinks a few times. Her blue eyes stare back at Diff. "Nothing. The commissions can wait. And Yunyan plays videogames. Especially on Saturdays. But she is awfully terrible at them…"
Vaska smiles as she speaks. Then she grabs a mug not just any mug, but Yunyan's mug, now filled with coffee. She slowly walks over to Yunyan and puts it down in front of her on the coffee table. In response, Yunyan just hums, clearly focused on the game. Vaska sinks down next to her on the couch, sipping coffee from a red mug with fire stripes on it.
It takes Yunyan a moment to pause the game and actually look at Diff.
"Thanks for your work. Make sure to write your report on time. We will have breakfast once Erica and Paul appear…" - Yunyan murmurs as she reaches for her mug, sipping coffee quietly.
At this time Paul walks into the common room, looking tired. His hand rests on his darkish brown hair. There are bags under his silver eyes. "Please remind me when Erica says, quick car maintenance… She means twelve hours of unpaid labour…"
"This is what you get for wanting to be that helpful." - Vaska comments, sipping her coffee while watching Yunyan struggle with the video game.
A few minutes later Johnny walks downstairs with Erica following behind. "Found sleepyhead." - Johnny declares, heading to the kitchen.
Soon everyone starts to sit around the table and eat croissants. Johnny is the first one to actually comment on it. "Who made this? Because it's delicious! The cheese inside it tastes good."
"I did." Vaska announces proudly. "I found this old recipe online."
As they talk suddenly Yunyan's phone lets out a buzz. She picks it up and unlocks it a phone with a purple case and a yellow star hanging from it by a chain.
"New set of commissions. A bunch white, a blue and one black commission…" Yunyan speaks. Her voice is quiet, calm.
As if all the joy from the world has been sucked out in an instant, everyone just stares at Yunyan. Except two people the newbies, Diff and Johnny. They look at everyone, expecting some sort of explanation while the sudden silence builds pressure.
"What do the colors mean?" Johnny asks, unable to bear the pressure of silence.
"Commissions on a white paper are in the…" Yunyan starts, clearly trying to find her words. "Relatively safe category."
She sips her coffee before putting the mug back down. "Blue commissions are from other Divisions. Most commonly asking for help." She takes a big breath, then blows it out, trying to remain calm before continuing.
"Black commissions are rare. In this group, someone has already lost their life." She looks up, slowly looking everyone in the eye. "And is in need of urgent assistance."
"What are we going to do?" Diff asks, his voice coming out as a quiet gasp.
The question hangs in the air, no one answers. The silence just grows and grows. It takes minutes for Yunyan to answer.
"We are talking about saving lives. We are not going to just sit around. First we fix the car, then we head out and be the reinforcement that saves that Division," Yunyan declares as she slowly stands up. Her voice is determined, ready to act.
"Let me hear it! Who is with me!" she shouts.
The rest of the crew jumps up and lets out loudly: "I'm in!" Like characters from a cringe teenager-superhero movie. Once everyone calms down and finishes breakfast, the peace settles back.
Yunyan, for example, goes back to gaming. Diff starts to wash the dishes. Johnny, Paul and Erica are in the garage fixing the car. Vaska sits on the other side of the couch, reading a magazine.
The front door creaks open and someone steps inside. A tall figure with long blonde hair and orange eyes. The person wears a brown jacket with black buttons on it and brown leggings. A large black duffel bag hangs on the shoulder, swaying by the side.
The person reaches for the black wireless headphones on their head, pulls them down, and speaks friendly. Judging from the voice the person is female.
"Good morning! Is the Division still hiring?" she asks with a warm smile on her face.
Vaska sits up on the couch, looking at the newcomer. "Clara!"
