Chapter 6 – Visitors and Revelations

Leor lay back on the cot in Arin’s apartment, the warmth from the healing session still lingering in his muscles. Arin’s mother had fussed over them for nearly an hour, her gentle hands glowing faintly as she traced over each bruise and scraped area. The side effects of their spar were strong, but thanks to her ability, their bodies were returned almost completely to normal.

Leor flexed his fingers experimentally, noting that the pressure rebound still lingered faintly in his arms. He had tested his limits, and while the pain had subsided, his body reminded him that there were consequences.

“You should hydrate more,” Arin’s mother said, handing him a mug of water.

Leor drank slowly, appreciating the silence that had settled over the apartment. Soon, he excused himself. “I think I’ll head home. Thanks for everything.”

“You two really are dangerous,” she murmured, shaking her head as he walked out the door.

Back at his apartment, Leor immediately sought out simple comfort. A warm shower, a quick meal, and the familiar quiet of his living room. He sank into his couch, the city’s lights twinkling through the wide window before him. For the first time since his awakening, he allowed himself to relax—just a little.

The faint buzzing of his monitoring band reminded him that the Arcane Academy exam was still looming. One week. That was all the time he had to refine his ability, understand the hidden costs, and prepare for whatever trials awaited him.

A sharp knock at the door interrupted his thoughts.

Leor frowned. He wasn’t expecting anyone.

“Who is it?” he called, a hint of caution in his voice.

“Elizabeth Brightheart,” said a melodic voice, calm but carrying authority. “I need to speak with Leor Nova.” Leor’s brows shot up. Elizabeth Brightheart… the name sounded familiar. He opened the door to see a young woman standing there, tall, with silver hair that caught the apartment light. Her piercing golden eyes carried an intensity that was both intimidating and captivating. A black Arcane Academy insignia was visible on her jacket.

“You… were watching us,” Leor said slowly, recognition dawning.

Elizabeth inclined her head. “I’ve been observing. Arcane has eyes everywhere, especially on new candidates with high potential.” She stepped in before he could respond, moving with a confidence that suggested she was accustomed to commanding space. Leor shut the door behind her, curiosity mixing with wariness.

“I assume you’re aware that your sparring session yesterday wasn’t just noticed casually,” Elizabeth said, her tone even. “Arcane Academy has already flagged both you and your friend for special attention. Your abilities… are unusual, and given the Academy’s current focus, candidates like you are extremely valuable.”

Leor leaned back in his chair, processing her words. “Valuable how?”

Elizabeth’s gaze sharpened. “The Eastern Kingdom of Lysara—the kingdom where Arcane Academy is based—has been consolidating its influence over the continent of Elyndor. They’re selecting elite candidates to train as part of the new Vanguard Initiative. The Entrance Exam isn’t just about gaining entry; it’s now a political tool, a way to identify and groom the strongest ability users for roles that could determine the balance of power across the continent.” She paused, letting the weight of her words settle. “Azure star has four inhabited continents: Elyndor itself, Virelia, Korrath, and Thassel, and one Wild Continent where no intelligent societies have established themselves… at least, none that we know of. Each inhabited continent has multiple kingdoms. Lysara is the most influential in Elyndor, but it isn’t the only one—there’s also Darvalin, southern Redwind, and the mountain city-states of Thassel. The Academy’s reputation means it trains individuals who will often serve as military leaders, strategic advisors, or explorers of the Wild Continent.” Leor’s eyes widened slightly. “So… this exam isn’t just for training. It’s… recruitment.”

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Elizabeth nodded. “Exactly. Your performance will be tracked meticulously. Not only your strength and control but your resilience, adaptability, and capacity for rapid strategic thinking. Arcane Academy wants to know if you can survive high-stress conditions and apply your ability under unexpected circumstances. It isn’t just physical prowess—they are testing your mind as much as your body.”

She moved closer to the couch, eyes narrowing slightly. “Which is why your abilities are so interesting. You, Leor Nova, have a push ability unlike anything the Academy has seen. The range, the versatility… it’s rare. And Arin Vale’s cryokinesis, especially with multi-construct control, makes him a formidable partner—or competitor. Both of you could rise quickly—or burn out fast if you mismanage your energy.”

Leor frowned. “Energy management… you mean like side effects?”

Elizabeth tilted her head. “Precisely. Push is not without its risks. Compressing force too narrowly, using rapid bursts, or overextending your control can cause physical strain, neural fatigue, or even internal organ stress. Cryokinesis carries similar costs—overproduction can affect your thermal balance, potentially freezing tissues unintentionally or causing involuntary frost damage.” She gave a small, knowing smile. “I’ve seen both happen to beginners who underestimate their abilities.”

Leor’s stomach tightened. “So we really have to be careful during the exam.”

“Yes,” Elizabeth said softly, but her tone carried a sharp edge. “And understand something else—the exam is no longer a simple measure of individual ability. Arcane Academy evaluates potential in the context of the political, military, and social landscape of Elyndor. Candidates who fail to demonstrate control, strategy, and awareness can be dismissed—or worse, sidelined entirely.”

She walked toward the window, gazing out at the glowing city. “The Eastern Kingdom invests heavily in Arcane graduates. Your success here could determine the trajectory of your life, your influence, even your survival in certain circles. If you pass with distinction, you will have access to resources, alliances, and knowledge few can dream of. If you fail, your potential may be absorbed or monitored by others—kingdoms, academies, or private factions with their own agendas.”

Leor exhaled slowly, trying to absorb everything. “So… this isn’t just a test. It’s… politics. Warfare. Strategy. And survival.”

Elizabeth nodded. “Welcome to the new era of Azure Star, Leor. Every ability user has a role. Every action you take, every demonstration of power, will ripple beyond what you can immediately see. And that includes the Wild Continent.”

Leor frowned. “The Wild Continent… no intelligent life, right?”

Elizabeth smiled faintly. “Officially, yes. But rumors persist. Ancient ruins, traces of unknown energy, areas untraveled by any expedition. Some say the Wild Continent is alive in ways we cannot measure yet. Arcane Academy has a vested interest in sending capable graduates to explore it. Who knows what could be discovered—or awakened—there.”

Leor leaned back, feeling both excitement and apprehension. The world was far bigger than he realized. What he had assumed was a simple test of ability was actually a test of survival, strategy, and influence.

Elizabeth’s eyes softened slightly as she looked at him. “I’m telling you this not to intimidate you, but to prepare you. Arcane Academy isn’t a playground. It’s a crucible. And candidates like you and Arin… you’ll need every advantage you can get.”

Leor finally nodded. “I understand. We’ll train smarter.”

Elizabeth turned toward the door. “Good. I wanted to make sure you had context before diving further. I’ll be observing again tomorrow, but from a distance—unless circumstances change. Keep pushing your limits, but respect the boundaries of your abilities.”

Leor watched her leave, mind racing.

He sank back into the couch, thinking about Elyndor, the kingdoms, the Wild Continent, and the stakes now resting on the upcoming Arcane Entrance Exam. One week. That’s all he had. One week to refine, understand, and master his ability—and survive the crucible that was Arcane Academy.

The world of Azure Star was no longer just about power. It was about survival, politics, and opportunity. And for Leor Nova, the pressure to succeed had just doubled.
