After apologising for being late and introducing himself to his teacher he was given an assessment sheet to fill out, he was told it was his own responsibility to find a seat so he scanned the classroom for seats that weren't taken, finding 2 available seats in the back he made his way towards them, the empty seats happened to be right next to each other, with one Infront and one behind, but he chose the one behind since it suited him better.
He wasn’t stupid or oblivious, so of course he was fully aware that many people were staring at him and talking about him, most of the discussion that he could make out was about his lateness or unusual appearance which didn't really bother him so he ignored them and walked towards the available seats.
The classroom was big enough for around 28 students but it seemed the class only had 24 students since there were only 24 desks. After briefly scanning the room he noticed that there were only 22 students, 23 including himself, -Maybe another student is late? Or perhaps it’s just a spare desk- he thought as he reached his seat.
Pulling out the chair and sitting down he felt a brief gaze from his left, he discreetly glanced at the source, a beautiful girl around his age with dark black hair, similar to his own but in a different shade and lacking the white strands, she had bright green eyes that he thought paired very nicely with her dark hair, she seemed to wear an expression of irritation, not the kind when someone's being annoying but the kind of irritation when you can’t figure something out, like the name of a song that's stuck inside your head, she also happened to be one of the students that he had noticed was talking about him.
Although he was curious about why the girl kept glancing at him, in the end he decided that it would be better to ignore her. He didn’t want to startle or annoy her by asking and if her staring was because she disliked him then he thought there really wasn’t any point in asking.
He started answering the assessment sheet and answered the questions as accurately as he could, it was actually a little difficult for him at first, not because he was unsure of his own abilities, but because some of the questions were tricky for him to personally answer, for example this question ‘How confident are you with magic’ due to specific reasons magic is more restricted for him than most, but despite that factor he was still quite good at using magic.
After finishing filling out the sheet he sensed the girl on his left leaning towards him and shortly after he felt a slight poke on his left arm, he glanced in the girl's direction. Her bright green eyes looked puzzled and there was a mix between a nervous and irritated expression plastered on her face.
Xarus: “Uh… Yes?” he asked, slightly surprised by her actions.
Dark haired girl: “Hi” the girl began “uh… sorry this is a bit awkward just asking randomly, but do we know each other?”
Xarus: “Huh? What?” he asked
Dark haired girl: “It’s just, you look familiar and it feels like we met before, I was trying to figure it out but I couldn’t and it’s really annoying me”
Xarus: -is that why she kept staring at me?-
Xarus: “Er, ok, let me think for a moment” he searched through his memories, it didn’t take long to reach the most likely conclusion.
Xarus: “Ah” he said, remembering her from this morning
Dark haired girl: “Ah?” the girl asked, curious
He nodded his head “We don’t know each other” he confidently proclaimed
Dark haired girl “...what?” the girl stared, dumbfounded
Xarus: “What?” he was sure that he had answered the question
Dark haired girl: “You seemed like you recognized me a moment ago though?”
Xarus: “That's because I did?”
Dark haired girl: “But we don’t know each other?” she asked a bit confused
Xarus: “Ah, I see” he said realising why she was confused
Dark haired girl: “?”
Xarus: “We have met before, but we definitely don’t know each other”
The girl stared at him for a moment before saying “that's so stupid, I asked if we knew each other, that includes if we had met before” She explained in exasperation
Xarus: “I don’t agree with that, knowing someone and meeting someone are completely different things and we met very briefly so I'm not even sure it should count as meeting, but you really should have specified if we met rather than asking “if we knew each other" because we don’t,” He complained.
Dark haired girl: “It’s common sense!” she yelled her face becoming red with anger
???: “Dude you’re kind of an idiot” Xarus looked over as a gorgeous crimson haired girl joined the conversation -Oh wow, she’s cute- he was very briefly stunned, but only for a moment and his reaction wasn’t noticeable, freezing wasn’t a new situation for him although it had been a long time since he last froze and it was also the first time without being in a troublesome situation.

Xarus: “...thanks I guess” the boy responded to the crimson girl
“Sorry, who are you guys? And why am I being bullied all of a sudden?” he joked nervously
Crimson haired girl: “I’m Ranni” the crimson haired girl scoffed
Dark haired girl: “I’m Sarah” the dark haired girl said, she was polite but it was clear she was a little annoyed.
Xarus: “What was that reaction?” he asked the Red haired girl, his voice giving off his surprise.
She smirked and said “it was because you’re an idiot”
Xarus: “What? Hey!”
Sarah: “And what’s yours?” she asked, ignoring their quarrel and getting the conversation back on track
Xarus: “My what?” he asked confused
Sarah:”...”
Ranni:”...”
They both stared at him as if he was the stupidest person in the world
Sarah: “Your name”
Xarus:”Oh!, ye-yeah that was obvious huh?” he stammered, blushing in embarrassment “My name is Xarus”
Ranni: “you really are an idiot aren’t you”
Xarus: “well I don’t think so, I’m just not used to people asking for my name”
Ranni: “wait… why no-” before Ranni could finish her question her voice was drowned out by Sarah.
Sarah: “Wait, you’re the boy from this morning!” she exclaimed, happy that she finally realised where she had met him.
Xarus: “Hm?” -oh yea, I got side-tracked so I didn’t actually get to explain where we met- “yea, that was me, sorry about ditching you but I was in a rush” he apologised
Sarah: “I made it on time anyways so it wasn’t a big deal in the end… wait why were you late? You didn’t have to talk to the police like I did”
Xarus: “well I was… it doesn't matter” his voice trailed off, he was not bothered to explain the reason ”I just ended up being late regardless”
Ranni: “Uh… I’m a little lost, what's this about the police?”
Sarah: “ah well, this morn-”
Mr Silva: “Okay! Whoever has not handed their assessment sheets in please come and bring them to me, I don’t care if they aren’t finished just as long as I get them”
Sarah: “Ah!” she said standing up from her desk, she turned to face Xarus "Are you done? I can take it up for you if you want"
Xarus: "U-Uh, yea sure, thanks" he said, handing her his finished sheet, she accepted it with a smile and walked over to the teacher.
Xarus: “you aren’t going to hand in your assessment sheet?” he asked, directing his attention to Ranni.
Ranni: “I haven’t finished it yet” she said as she hurried to fill in the remaining questions “you were late, how did you finish before me?” she lamented
Xarus: “Eh, there's not much to say is all” he said, placing his hand on the side of his neck and pushing, cracking it loudly multiple times “Though it was still tricky in the beginning”
Xarus: “He said not to worry if it wasn’t finished” he reminded her
Ranni: “Just cause he said that doesn't mean I shouldn’t finish it” he found himself agreeing with that sentiment, “Done!” she said standing up from her desk as Sarah returned.
Watching Ranni walk off Sarah asked “hey so this morning… back when you saved me from those goons”
He snickered
Sarah: “What?”
Xarus: “Nothing, Nothing, Just don’t hear the term “goons” used to describe a bunch of thugs anymore, please continue”
Doing as instructed she asked “Why did you help me?”
Xarus stared at her
Sarah: “Don't look at me like that's an unreasonable question to ask!” she yelled slightly annoyed
Xarus: “because it was the kind thing to do”
Sarah: “The Kind thing to do? That’s it?” she asked
Xarus: “yes?” he responded a bit confused by her reaction
Sarah: “you don’t want a reward or anything?” she asked suspiciously and nervously
Xarus: “I don’t like the way you said that”
Sarah: “I don’t know what you mean”
Xarus: “...”
Sarah: “...”
Xarus: “No I don’t want any rewards of any kind, If I did I would have asked back when we met, I just think it's better to be kind then not”
Xarus: “And besides I wasn’t risking my life or anything, They wouldn’t of been able to touch me unless I let them”
Sarah: “r-really, that’s quite the claim” she stammered
Xaurus: “well I’m pretty fast and they were slow, they couldn’t use magic either so there was really nothing they could do”
Sarah: “That just makes me feel worse about losing”
Xarus: “Er, wait wait, that's not what I meant, I mean they had a nullifier with them so that put you at a disadvantage for sure, but you still took down one of them and injured another so that was pretty good!” His words rushed out of his mouth as he tried to make her feel better
Sarah: “ thanks, but that was using magic before they activated the nullifier” his attempts were in vain however.
Xarus: “...Ah… well, still it’s impressive, you’re just a student after all, and they were grown men"
Sarah: “Thanks” she said, despite his clumsy handling she did actually feel a little bit better “Although you took them all out easily” she pouted, returning to her depression
Xarus: “I’m an exception, I doubt there are many people like me” he paused for a moment and added in lowered voice "I definitely hope there aren’t anyway”
She only heard the first part and she wanted to ask what he meant by that, but Ranni had just returned from handing in her sheet and right after Mr Silva addressed the class, which made it hard to continue the conversation.
Mr Silva: "Alright guys I’ve taken attendance, So now I’ll officially start the lesson" he yelled loudly so his voice carried across the room but not obnoxiously loud, it was a good in-between, or at least Xarus thought so. Although before he could actually start the lesson the door to the classroom swung open and a boy carrying a stack of boxes walked through, he was a little taller than Xarus, and had dark green hair which Xarus thought suited him, the newcomers face lacked any facial scars or blemishes so his natural handsome looks were quite evident.
Boy: “Hey Mr Silva, I brought the stuff that you asked for”
Mr Silva “ah! Thanks Axel, please choose a seat”
Axel: “Sure” the boy said, he handed the boxes to Mr Silva and then searched the room for available seats, after noticing that the only seat remaining was the one in front of Xarus, He made his way over there, pulled out the seat and sat down.
Mr Silva placed the boxes that the new boy had brought down on his desk and after confirming the contents of the boxes he began the lesson.
